The New Social Media has become a very important tool for all of us, especially for us Filipinos. New Social Media specifically the social networking were one of the main reasons why all the news about “ondoy” spread instantly; from the rescue operations, to videos of disasters to donation.. the new social media became an instant help for all of us, but what if it instantly becomes the threat to your life??
Jacque Bermejo (a Filipina worker in Dubai) became an instant celebrity over the last few days because of the alleged remarks she said on Facebook;“buti n lng am hir in dubai! maybe so many sinners bak der! so yeah deserving wat hapend (sic),”..
Filipinos were outraged by the comments, an instant 1,000+ hate comments were immediately sent to her Facebook wall; blogs and forums were flooded with fierce messages over her because of the very insensitive remark.
But what if Jacque was innocent?? Last night, ABS-CBN broadcast an exclusive interview with her and according to Jacque it was not her who made that comment, it was someone who hacked her account. Jacque said that she was very terrified and afraid of her life because of what happened…
I don’t know if it was the truth or not but in my own opinion I do believe she is innocent; she was just a victim. Like other victims of ‘ondoy’ , she doesn’t know where to start now, “para siyang nasalanta din ng bagyo”, typhoon filled with outrage over her.
The New social media is really powerful it can save lives but what is sad, is that it can also destroy one’s life (both literally and figuratively). Just like what I said in my recent post “Internet and our Future”, I am still now afraid of what might happen to new social media and to our society but like what I always say let us just continue to pray and hope that our future will always be better.
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”- Jeremiah 29:11
